Essential Factors to Keep in Mind When Moving

Inventory: Write a list of what you have to move. Do this room by room, marking full boxes on the sides (so these can be seen when boxes are stacked) with what room they will be going to and if there are any fragile items inside.

Donations: The less you have to move the better so start the pre-move purging process early and begin by deciding which belongings you no longer require and can donate or recycle.

Renting: You'll need to give your landlord notice and a heads up about the move. Many leases require tenants to give their landlord at-least two months notice and things need to be left as they were when moving in to ensure their deposit can be returned.

Fixtures and fittings: if you are a seller, you should make sure you have your ‘Property Fixtures and Fittings Form’ to hand so you know what you have agreed to leave behind in the property. It’s easy to leave behind things like curtain rails, light fittings and carpets – but refer to the contract to make sure you take what you are entitled to move.

Move ALL your belongings: don’t forget to check the loft and outbuildings like sheds. You usually always have more than you first thought!

Removal companies: It is important not to go cheap when moving your beloved items, so when comparing quotes, do so based on the service, ratings and feedback of each company, not just the price. Think about what is required to move and the company most suitable for it. We at SCOT REMOVALS offer all sizes of removals.

Timings: Find out exactly what time you need to leave the property and agree with the removal company that the property will be clear by this time. You’ll also need this information when you’re actively preparing to move, as you may need to leave enough time to defrost your freezer or un-plumb your washing machine.

Insurance: Check with your insurance company what cover your items have when moving. When engaging with removal companies, check what price they charge for insurance and what it covers.

Updating your address: Notify utility companies, banks, housing associations, council of your move. Some may require advance notification as you may want to move the same phone line to the new address or take up a new contract. Closing balances may need to be cleared before moving. So these are things worth thinking about before moving.

Cleaning: Consider having a professional cleaning company come in after you have left. For some tenancies, this may be a contractual requirement.
